Solar power systems combined with energy storage will become more common as the cost of batteries decreases. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) estimates that solar batteries could be 4 times cheaper before 2030.

Solar power will also become “smarter” through the use of platforms that manage generation and storage in real time to maximize the value of energy. For example, storing all surplus energy produced around noon to meet the high demand that comes immediately after sunset.

The virtual power plant being developed in South Australia is an interesting example of where photovoltaic technology is moving. It has a generation capacity of 250MW and a storage capacity of 650 MWh, based 100% on distributed capacity: 50,000 households with photovoltaic arrays and batteries.
